Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD)
In February 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that it would no longer be a criminal offence in Canada for physicians to assist someone to end their life in certain circumstances.
On June 17, 2016 the federal government passed legislation that details the circumstances in which a person may be eligible for an assisted death.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for medical assistance in dying in Manitoba you must meet all of the following conditions:
- Be eligible for health services funded by the provincial or federal government.
- Be at least 18 years old and capable of making decisions about your health.
- Have a serious and incurable illness, disease or disability.
- Be in an advanced state of decline that cannot be reversed.
- Be suffering unbearably from your illness, disease, disability or state of decline.
- Be at a point where your natural death has become reasonably foreseeable taking into account all of your medical circumstances.
- Have made a voluntary request and have provided informed consent for medical assistance in dying free of any outside pressure or influence.
Process
Currently, only the provincial medical assistance in dying clinical team is authorized to provide medical assistance in dying within regional health care facilities. The provincial medical assistance in dying clinical team is able to facilitate medical assistance in dying throughout the province and can work alongside your regular health care team.
